Question: I have had two instances of white stool in the past week with normal stool in between. This happened once before about 5 years ago and my doctor at the time said not to worry about it since it resolved quickly. My gall bladder was removed about 10 years ago with no problems afterwards. My physical with bloos work was fine in October. I am taking labetalol 100 mg twice a day, Advair discus inhaler twice a day, and 8 weeks ago started levothyroxine 12.5 in the morning. About 8 weeks ago also started 50,000 IU of D3 every two weeks per doctor's rx. For the last week I have gone to the bathroom twice a day rather than the usual once a day but the total amount of stool in a day seems about the same. There is no evidence of fat in the stool, no bad smell, no floating stool, I have no signs of jaundice, no pain or any other symptoms of any kind. I have an appointment with my doctor in two days but the wait seem like forever,

Brief Answer:
Liver insufficiency

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ma’am, I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns but this could indicate an underlying liver problem probably hepatitis or cirrhosis. I would recommend that you get a blood test for liver functions including SGOT and SGPT along with hepatitis markers tests. It would also be beneficial if you could get an ultrasound abdomen to asses you le liver size. please send back the results once they are out. I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you - I have a doctor appointment and I'm sure he will check this out. I do wonder about the likelihood of these possibilities as I have never consumed alcohol or used drugs and in 50 years have only had sex with one man (my husband, who is very healthy). I have thought if there is any problem it would perhaps be caused by one of the medicines - all of which I have been taking for less than a year (labetalol - 10 months; Advair discus - since early October and Synthroid since mid-October). Do you think the problem with liver could be from one of these? I forgot to mention that my gallbladder was removed about 15 years ago, if that makes any difference. Thank you again. I will send you results bt it will probably be a week or so.

Dear Dr. Saad- I had my appointment with internist today. He did thorough exam (looking for jaundice & swelling, palpate liver/abdomen, exam urine, etc.). I did not realize he had done liver function tests in Oct. at last visit (because I told him I don't like to take medications because I worry they might harm my liver - so he did tests to get a baseline). He also did hepatitis markers when I first started seeing him about 10 months ago - all normal. He asked about diet changes (I'm eating more fiber now and have started eating unsalted popcorn with a little butter as a snack). He feels since stools are back to normal as of today and all looks good otherwise that I am probably ok but he said to call if problem recurs (and stop eating popcorn and so much fruit). He agreed to do liver tests after the holidays as a precaution and to ease my mind. Thank you for your input, it enabled me to have a better discussion with my doctor.
