I Have Obstructive Sleep Apnea And Haven’t Been Able To

Question: I have obstructive sleep apnea and haven’t been able to get a cpap but am not sleeping through the night anymore since my diagnosis. My primary prescribed ambien. Is that safe to take with the apnea, or will I stop breathing, or die in my sleep?
Brief Answer:
Don't take any sleeping pills.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on 'Ask A Doctor' forum.
I can understand your concern.
No, you should not take any sleeping pills.
Sleeping pills like Ambien can actually worsen the underlying sleep apnea and cause hypercapnia (high carbon dioxide) which can be life-threatening.
So better to avoid such pills.
CPAP is a must and best for sound sleep.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
