I Have Some Difficulty Swallowing Because It Feels Like There

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2020
Question: I have some difficulty swallowing because it feels like there is either some phlegm in my throat or there is something stuck in my throat. I also have to clear my throat often. I have had this going on and off for a while and it seems like it still occurs. When I eat or drink, I can swallow like normal. It occurs more when I am not eating/drinking and just swallowing my saliva.

I have history of seasonal allergies and also GERD. I am taking fexofenadine every other day, but nothing for GERD.

Hello and welcome in Ask the Doctor

I can understand your concern

According to the history of your symptoms I strongly believe that your concerns are directly related to your allergies and GERD.
Fexofenadine is good for seasonal allergies. For GERD you should take Pantoprazol 20 mg twice per day orally for two weeks. You should be careful for the food. Try to avoid smoking alcoholics spicy food. Try also to have frequent food and in small quantities. Avoid having supper late at night and use two pillows for sleeping.

You will feel good soon.

Hope to have been helpful

Thank you. I do not smoke or drink alcohol, and I do not generally eat spicy foods. I do intermittent fasting, my eating window is between 12pm and 8 pm.

Are there any issues with that?

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

In your condition we don't recommend to do fasting. You should try to have normal cycle of feeding and to see how your concerns will be.
You can also start for some days Omeprazol instead.

may I ask why intermittent fasting would not be good for this condition?

Brief Answer:
It's not good for the stomach

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

No it's not good forr the gerd. It does interrupt the normal cycle of the enzymes production and function and as a result worsens the acid reflux of the stomach.
