I Have Tendonitis In My Left Arm Arm Aches And I Have Tingling In My Thumb Discomfort Also In My Left Shoulder

Question: I am 60 year old female and I have what I think is tendonitis in my left arm. Arm aches and I have tingling in my thumb. Discomfort also in my left shoulder. I had this in both arms about 15 years ago, and I had to wear braces, even while sleeping. I don't want to go through that again! I am using ice about 4 - 6 times a day and have several wraps I use, but I don't know if they are helping or not. I also have Sjogrens Syndrome, by the way, which I deal with as best I can. Went to my doctor and was told to keep icing my arm and using Advil for pain. He recommended I go for physical therapy, which is very expensive, even with my insurance. The pain and discomfort is wearing me down. I am a secretary, but I think this was brought on by carrying too many heavy grocery bags and laundry baskets up to my apartment. Can you give me some advice?

Brief Answer:
Oral muscle relaxant and physical therapy can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

The constant pain that you are having is likely to be related to inflammation of tendons or frozen shoulder. The tingling in the thumb is related to some nerve root irritation. In addition to advil you can use a local analgesic gel in the area. Physical therapy will help in the long term relief. In case the pain is persistent then you can get an oral muscle relaxant prescribed by your physician.

Hello Dr. Tayal - thank you for your response, I have been using Advil and ice on my arm and shoulder. I am not sure if the frozen shoulder fits, as I have full range of movement in the shoulder, but the left side crunches and cracks a lot. I get sharp shooting down into my left forearm, which is where it hurts the most, it aches and has pins and needles sensation on the inside of my arm and my thumb. This is very distressing. I have been to both my chiropractor and doctor and was told to do the same things. But they don't seem to help much. My elbow is very sensitive and it is hard to sleep at night, since I can't find a comfortable position for my arm. I am nervous about physical therapy, which I have had in the past and only seemed to make my symptoms worse.

Brief Answer:
Local steroid injection can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If the full range of movement in shoulder is not painful then frozen shoulder is not likely. Local steroid injections can help in reducing the inflammation that you have. Physical therapy will help in the long term. Initially it might seem to aggravate the pain. Taking oral muscle relaxants will help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
