Question : I just finished a course of augmentin for a sinus infection, these new symptoms started the day after I finished.

My stomach is very sore like I'm constipated, low and high, like large intestine and/or liver. It's very distracting, but not quite painful. I don't think I'm constipated and I'm not having diarrhea.

My urine is orange like I'm very dehydrated. I've been drinking normally.

My appetite is unusually low and I feel a little weak (maybe related).

I get mild heartburn every time I eat.

No kidney/lower back soreness. I drink alcohol very rarely. These symptoms have been consistent, lasted 3 days and are all very unusual for me. Something is definitely wrong, I just don't know what it is.

Hi...
Welcome to "Ask a Doctor"service.

I have gone through your symptoms and here is my opinion.

Most common side effects of Augmentin are abdominal.
There can be nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhoea, fatigue, liver dysfunction, jaundice, bloating and gas.

At times, there occurs a superadded abdominal infection by clostridia or yeast which cause bowel inflammation and colitis.

Actually,Antibiotic not only kills the bacteria responsible for the infection targeted (sinus in your case) but also the friendly gut bacteria which help in digestion and assimilation.
The balance of microbiome shifts and there are side effects.

Drink lot of water and keep yourself well hydrated.
Have curd and other commercially available probiotics to replenish lactobacillus.
Eat raw fruits and vegetables.
Avoid sugars and refined starch.
Take Paracetamol for pain,as and when required.
If the symptoms do not improve, see your clinician.

Hope that I have answered your query.
If you have any doubts, please let me know.
Happy living.
Regards.

Now I'm itchy everywhere, and my urine is still orange. I'm definitely drinking enough water, this is more than just a gut bacteria problem.

Brief Answer:
POST ANTIBIOTIC ABDOMINAL UPSET

Detailed Answer:
Orange colored urine has 3 causes.....

1)A Liver or bile duct dysfunction( especially if you also have light-colored stools).

2)Some medications like Medications used to treat TB,UTI etc.

3)It may also be caused by dehydration.

I told you that Augmentin causes liver hypo functioning, clinical or sub clinical.
As you have itching too (Iitching is there even after finishing your antibiotic course,it is unlikely be due to antibiotic),possibility of some degree of jaundice can not be ruled out.

Take anti histaminics like Levocetrizine or Loratidine for itching.
Avoid fatty meals.
Continue drinking, plenty of oral fluids and water.
Visit your clinician who would procure your liver function tests.

Regards.
