Question: I need back surgery (around L-5) and was planning to put it off until next XXXXXXX My legs & one hand seem to be starting to go numb . I'm wondering if this could be the result of the needed back surgery or is numbness in the arm excluded by a lumbar backproblem ?

Brief Answer:
Can be related to spine problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have gone through your query and understand your health concerns ,
The numbness of hand and leg can be due to mild nerve root compression or irritation at the level of lumbar spine or thoracic spine or this can be related to low levels of vitamin B12.
An MRI scan of the spine will help in detecting if surgery is needed earlier or not. Meanwhile you can start with methylcobalamin supplements after getting the levels tested and see if it helps.
I hope this answers your query.
