Question: I recently got an ultrasound of my pregnancy at what I think was at 4 weeks and 5 days. There appears to be a small fetus and they also asked me if I wanted to hear the heartbeat. The place I went to seemed a bit run down and am sure of their time prediction of 4 to 5 weeks. Are they correct?

I also had a partner at 7 weeks and 4 days. From past experience it seems as if they were incorrect and that I am further along based on the ultrasound picture.

Brief Answer:
Heart beat of fetus visualised in 5.5 to 7 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

A fetus of 4 weeks 5 days is very small and heart beat is not appreciated.

To hear the heart beat of a fetus, it should be around 5.5 to 7 weeks of pregnancy. and is earlier in transvaginal ultrasound scan and later in transabdominal ultrasound scan.

Therefore it is possible that your pregnancy is around 5.5 to 7 weeks if they told you about the heart beat. A pregnancy of 4 weeks and 5 days will not show heart beats.

From the picture I uploaded, what is your opinion?

Brief Answer:
Looking at the picture it appears to be 6 to 7 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back to us.

We go by measurements of the gestational sac when making an opinion on the pregnancy age.

Usually at 5 weeks, the sac size is 10 mm and at 7 weeks it is 25 mm in diameter.

Looking at the picture it appears to be 6 to 7 weeks, however measurements are important when making an accurate opinion.

My first partner I had intercourse with was on April 1st and my second partner was on April 21st. From the exact day of intercourse do I count from there the amount of weeks that I am pregnant? I am unsure of my period because I have irregular periods. The date of May 24th is when I got the ultrasound and they said I am four to five weeks, but from your interpretation of the ultrasound I am 6 to 7 weeks. Does April 1st or April 21st of intercourse make more sense?

Brief Answer:
Please send report copy of the scan done

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

We usually count the pregnancy from the day you had your last menstrual periods and called date from LMP. However, you have mentioned about irregular periods so there can be a small problem in calculating the exact detail.

In your case we need to work backwards using the gestational sac diameter as the primary information on the age of pregnancy.

I need to know the gestation sac diameter in the above image to come to calculate and give you the most accurate information.

All ultrasound scans in pregnancy contain measurements and I request to please share the report copy for calculating.
