Question : I take 100 mg. Losartan every morning which has been fine in keeping my blood pressure down. Last Tuesday, I had a Diverticulitis flare and began taking the Cipro/Flagyl antibiotics. Since, the flare and taking the meds by BP has been at times in the 150's over 90. Is the flare and meds perhaps causing this and should I go in to a doctor for increase in BP? I am a male, 61 y/o, type 2 diabetic. Thank you.

Hello!

Welcome on - Ask a Doctor - service!

After passing carefully through your concern, let me explain that your suspicions are right.

In fact, there exists a possibility of interactions between your high BP medication (Losartan) and Flagyl (Metronidazole). Flagyl may inhibit the conversion of Losartan to its active metabolite (E-3174); leading to subsequent reduced effect of Losartan.

In such case, what determines the degree of such an interaction would be the actual uncontrolled BP values. it is necessary to closely monitor your BP values several times daily for a couple of days.

If they remain persistently high, then you should discuss with your attending (prescribing) doctor on the possibility of optimizing your hypertension therapy, at least temporarily until diverticulitis therapy is over.

Considering the fact you are also a diabetic patient, it is recommended to maintain your BP values, as well as other possible cardio-vascular risk factor strictly under control. That's why you should not hesitate to discuss with your doctor on such an issue.

Hope to have been helpful to you!
