However, if you do have nasal polyps, the initial treatment is usually a nasal steroid spray, such as fluticasone or mometasone, which you can usually get over the counter without a prescription. If your symptoms are not relieved after a few weeks with this, steroid pills can be considered, and if that doesn't help, sometimes surgery can be done to remove the polyps (though they often come back).
