Question : I took a small sip of my kids milk that was left out all night (not thinking!) It had a bad smell. I am 5 weeks pregnant and freaking out. Again it wasn't a lot but it was some. The milk was pasteurized originally. Do you think this could harm my pregnancy? Is listeria a concern? I'm scared.

Brief Answer:
Listeria infection is unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for letting us know your health concern.

I have gone through your query and would like to offer some information.

Listeria infection is unlikely in the current scenario since the milk is pasteurized. However, fermentation may have taken place and that is probably the reason for the bad taste.

Your pregnancy is not going to be affected and please relax. If you find any abdominal discomfort, diarrhea and/or vomiting, food poisoning should be suspected and get immediate assistance.

You can use probiotics as precaution to counter any mild infection.

You can inform your health care provider for further assistance.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

regards,
Shanti.V.
