Question : I took misoprostol around 12pm, jst few mins after taking d pill i had cramps nd bleeding. Jst around 4:30pm wen i had2 pee i saw smetin like a blood clot almost a size of a lemon drop in d toilet. Tho i dnt knw if its a clot bt its covered wit blood, i think am having heavy bleeding

Hi,

I would like to know were you pregnant before starting misoprostol. And was pregnancy confirmed by blood /urine test and ultrasound scan.

Misoprostol cause uterine cramps. But this action is usually occurs hours after taking pill. It might be as long as 3-4 hours before the action sets in. In your description, you said that cramps and bleeding was after minutes. More likely the set of actions were independent and not related to pill.

I'd like to know the circumstances / symptoms before you had the pill and were indeed pregnant.

Before i took misoprostol i took ibuprofen jst an hour. After taking d abortion pill, i had little cramps, the bleeding started not less than 30mins. Jst 7:05pm i took another ibuprofen.

Hi,

Did you take mifepristone tablets before misoprostol?

If pregnancy was confirmed, then this could be the aborted fetus. You might bleed for a couple of days. The flow would gradually reduce there after. If you are bleeding too heavy and for more than couple of days, you should seek medical attention.

I will also insist that you get an ultrasound scan after a week to confirm complete abortion and there is no residual particles left behind. The scan is the only means to confirm complete abortion.

You've followed the protocols..

Hi,

You seem to have followed the protocols of abortion pills. And so far it seems to be working. The clot was most likely aborted fetus. And hope all the contents were evacuated as it happens in most cases. So unless you are facing heavy bleed for more than 2 days, I'd not be overly concerned. However you need to get an ultrasound done after 2 weeks.

Apologies for the late reply. I was away from the internet.

Cramps occur to help evict products of conception. It is going to persist as long as the products remain in the uterus and during the time of bleed. In most women the process of eviction and bleed is complete in couple of days. So if the cramps persists with the same severity for more than 2 days, consider visiting your gynecologist for examination.

Antibiotic not necessarily needed...

Hi,

Antibiotic is not necessarily needed in one who underwent medical termination of pregnancy. It's recommended in patients who undergo termination through dilatation and evacuation or other intervention means.

It is also recommended if there is products of fetus left behind through incomplete abortion.

At this point therefore i don't think you need infection medication (antibiotics) unless there is infection or incomplete abortion.

Assuming the abortion was complete, it is unlikely to bleed again. However you need to perform an ultrasound scan at the end of week if not next week to confirm complete abortion.

Bleeding could repeat if abortion is not a complete one.

Light spotting is not uncommon in this circumstances. I'd be concerned about heavy bleeding, similar to ones you had few days after starting mifepristone.
