Hello and welcome to "Ask A Doctor"
Proton pump inhibitors does play an inevitable role in the treatment of barrett's esophagus as well as in controlling the symptoms.
Though there has been some studies that have shown to worsen the condition on the intake of PPIs for long term, personally I would suggest it better for you to take them for a few days time so as to keep your symptoms in check, after which you can discuss with your doctor for an integrative approach.
You can go through the benefits of taking PPIs from https://gut.bmj.com/content/46/2/144
Meanwhile, I would also suggest you to do the following:
- Avoid tea or coffee or any caffeinated drinks.
- If you are overweight, try loosing some weight.
- Always have your food a least 2 hours before going to bed.
- Sleep with your head in elevated position.
- Drink plenty of water.
- You can take an OTC probiotic, which helps in strengthening your gut immunity.
I hope this helps,
Please feel free to discuss further,
Regards

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Thanks for writing back,
Sorry for the delay in replying back,
I have read through your query and can certainly understand your concern,
Since your biopsy showed to have non-dysplastic Barrett's oesophagus, the chances of Non dysplastic BE to progress to cancer, is less than 1%. So, I would say, please do not be worried unnecessarily, as stress can cause increased release of acid in the stomach, thereby increasing your symptoms.
Please make sure to follow the lifestyle modifications that I mentioned in my previous reply,
Also it would be wise to get a follow up every 2-3 years, just so as to keep a check on the status of the oesophageal lining.
I hope this helps,
Please feel free to discuss further,
Regards
