Question : I went into an urgent care yesterday and received IV fluids. Today, I have noticed quite a bit of bruising at the site of the IV injection. Is this normal? Or has something gone wrong at the site? How long will this take to heal if it is normal? I have attached a picture for you to look at. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello there,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...

I've checked the attached picture. The bruises and hematoma surrounding can be appreciated. Yes, this is commonly observed after receiving the IV-drip and injections, fluid extravasation under the skin and mild cuts and small capillary damage. It may take up to 7-10days to clear off completely.

Nothing to worry. Just apply some ice compression over the area thrice daily for the next few days. Do ensure to keep the area mobilised (even gently massaging intermittently would do). However, if you're taking any blood thinners (eg. Aspirin etc.) then please please report it to your doctor for a supervised dose revision during this period.

If there's any pain, you may take a mild analgesic i.e. Tab ACETAMINOPHEN (eg. TYLENOL) 650mg twice daily and observe how you stay...

All these will help ease the symptoms and fasten the recovery process.

Let me know if I can assist you further...

Take Care
Kind Regards
