Question : I went to the emergency room with upper stomach pain. The ER doctor performed an ultrasound and my organs were fine, except he said I had a small amount of fat in my liver. My blood test were normal. He said I can reverse the issue with changing my diet and losing weight. I weigh 344lbs. what are your thoughts? My ALT: 42 AST:31

Brief Answer:
you can certainly reverse this, please see the detailed answer below...

Detailed Answer:
Hello there,
Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concerns...

First of all, please note, at clinical practice, ALT and AST ranges are not considered significantly elevated unless they're elevated 2 to 3 fold. So, this AST 31 and ALT 42 is not considered clinically significant. If the bilirubin and GGT level in the Liver function test also reported fine, then you need not worry.

However, since your blood tests were normal (I believe they must've checked for Diabetes and Lipid profile also), then you can certainly reverse this 'small amount of fat in the liver' with strict dietary and lifestyle modifications.

Just take a balanced high protein, high fibre, low-fat organic diet with a lot of green vegetables, seasonal fruits, and salads...

Never to skip breakfast...Have homemade foods mainly and avoid fast/junk/processed foods and fizzy drinks...

Drink plenty of water throughout the day...refrain from tobacco and alcohol (if at all do)...

It'll be better to join a gym and start working out under the supervision of the gym-trainer.

Do ensure to have a good night's sleep of 6-8hrs per day...

Let me know if I can assist you further...
Wish you a good health...

Take Care
Kind Regards

Brief Answer:
follow as already advised...

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

Thanks for following up,

Well, the bilirubin level is fine. Although no mention of the specifics, this most likely is the report of random blood sugar which is also ok.

So, no need to worry, just follow all the advice as detailed earlier.

Wish you a good health...
