Question: I%E2%80%99m so over these issues. im waiting for my health insurance to renew and i really dont want to become a frequesnt flyer. i just want to get to the bottom of this. i feel like I%E2%80%99ve been fighting these tongue and throat issues for months now. I need reaasurrence as now the odd sensation is near the back of my tongue and to the right. i looked way back and am concerned it looks inflamed like slight swollen... atleast to me but honestly i havent tried to look at the back (down) of my throat until now. i cant get that great of a photo. the right side of my tongue also feels slightly odd. its def. much better than it was. im recovering from what appears to be a viral infection (which im familiar with) but the tongue sensations are new (last few months) and not common. I just really wish it would stop. My biggest fear is a food allergy but I dont have any confirmed food allergies. the sensations dont get worse before or after I eat... it actually feels better while eatting. it also feels better first thing in the morning and seems to get worse throughout the day right now. i know ive written several posts and ive tried what has been suggested. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you for your time. i know the photo isnt great.

additional: no fever, lots of nasal congestion thats starting to settle in chest and coughing up phlem.

Brief Answer:
Allergic rhinitis is likely the cause- helpful measures explained below

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service,

I carefully read your query and also checked the uploaded image.

Your throat seems a little red. By what you explain, I think the symptoms you have, the red throat and the sensations in the tongue, can be caused by postnasal drip, probably due to allergic rhinosinusitis.

Patients with allergic rhinosinusitis may have secretions run at the back of their throat and cause local inflammation of the throat and the tongue.

There is not much information if you have used any treatment so far but I would advise you to:
- do nasal lavage with normal saline solution (0.9%) 2-3 times a day. This is to wash off any secretions and rinse the nose and the back of the throat

- after the nasal lavage try to gently blow your nose and remove any extra secretions
- at night before bedtime apply nasal spray with a steroid (Fluconase), one spray in each nostril
- take Cetirizine 10 mg at bedtime

- if you have heartburn and burping other than the symptoms you already mentioned, I would advise you to use Omeprazole 20 mg 30 minutes before breakfast and try to eat frequent small amounts of food during the day (better eat 5 small meals than 2-3 big ones)

You will need to take this treatment for a few weeks and you should notice improvement within the first two weeks.

I hope this is helpful and answers your query.
I remain at your disposal in case further assistance is needed.
