Brief Answer:
With correct treatment dissection may be treated successfully.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service.

I have read your query and here is my advice.

In most of the cases, carotid artery dissection (spontaneous or traumatic) can be treated successfully if the correct diagnosis is achieved and treatment is started.

However, this is a condition that in a percentage of cases (around 5%) may result in fatal outcomes.

A number of factors (such as age, previous health status, time to diagnosis and treatment, etc.) can influence the outcomes.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

so he was 47 healthy as can be body was fit worked very hard every day after the accident he lost conciousness for a minute and came to complaining of neck pain but dident think he had to go to the doctors at that time so 3 hours later he complained of neck pain so i called emt and by time he got to the hospital he was unresponsive so after first ct scan there still was no sign of a stroke just unresponsive. the only thing they found was this caroid artery otherwise healthy never done drugs..now my quiestion is if i would have got him to the hospital right after it happened what would be the percent of his life being saved because he dident start to decline for 3 hours so if they were monitoring him in the er trauma unit could they have sved his life

Brief Answer:
Early diagnosis and treatment increases chances of favorable outcome.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Early diagnosis and treatment for carotid artery dissection increase the chances of a favorable outcome.

So, if the patient was transported right after the accident at the hospital, chances of surviving should have been higher, however, it is difficult to give you a precise percentage.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to discuss with me if you have further questions.
