Question : I have eczema in both legs between ankle and calf area. I apply vaseline after shower everyday. I also apply cooling pad once a day and slight steroid about twice a week. I tried hibiclens to avoid any infection. I put hibiclens on, left it for 20 minutes and then washed it. I noticed that my itching was reduced by hibiclens. My questions are:
1)is it ok to use hibiclens every day
2) Is it ok to leave it on for say 30 minutes
3) Does hibiclens normally reduce itching.
4) are there any side effects of hibiclens.

Hello,
Hibiclens would exacerbate eczema as it is alcohol based and therefore drying and therefore you should avoid it. Instead use plenty of moisturizer along with a potent topical steroid cream like clobetasol propionate 0.05 % or Betamethasone dipropionate 0.05% cream twice daily. In addition I suggest you to take an oral antihistamine e.g Cetrizine 10mg once daily for symptomatic relief from itching. These are prescription medications.

I dont think you should use hibiclens at all on your eczema. You can use an antibacterial soap or body wash instead during bath but thereafter use only moisturizer and a topical steroid cream. May be you can upload an image of the affected area in "Reports section" for me to have a look at.
