Question: Hello Doctor
In the recent health checkup the HbA1C was 5.7 % of total Hgb.
The report says 5.7 to 6.4% is Pre Diabetes.
Does this mean we have to take pre caution? Or we are at risk for diabetes?
Do we need to do a follow up test again after sometime?
Any other things to keep in mind or infer from this?
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Hi,

Detailed Answer:
You are right, that in non-diabetics, the reading of 5.7 to 6.4 is considered as pre diabetics. These patients do not need any specific treatment, except a regular follow up for HbA1C yearly. So, I will advise you, just go for a follow up reading after 1 year. Otherwise also, your reading is on the lowermost margin of prediabetic range.
Even also, we just advise the patients for specific treatment with medicine when HbA1C is more than 7.0. For readings between 6.4-7.0, only life style changing including dietary restrictions is advised.
Thanks.
