Is AST Level Of 100 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Jul 2015
Question: I am a healthy 29 yo female who went to my doctor for checkup. All of my lab work was normal or low except for an AST of 100 (alt normal, Bili normal, etc). I do not take Tylenol and usually do not drink much. I had recently gone to Europe and drank more wine than normal. I also had started a crossfit like exercise program literally 4 days prior to my blood test and could barely move. I have read strenuous exercise with muscle breakdown can cause an increase in AST. Do you think this might be the cause and when should I expect my numbers to go down if I have quit all alcohol and the exercise regimen. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Your high AST may be due to alcohol, exercise or birth control pills.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Your AST level is slightly high. AST is the liver enzyme and its level increase in liver cell damage by any cause. It can be due to alcohol, sub clinical viral infection or drug induced.
AST is also found in skeletal muscle. So its level can be increased by strenuous exercise.

You have history of alcohol, heavy exercise and taking birth control pill XXXXXXX
So any one of these can leads to high AST level.

However your other tests like ALT and bilirubin are normal so no need to big worry. No any treatment is required right now.

Just avoid all alcohol and heavy exercise. Your AST level will come down to normal within 4 weeks.

Repeat your AST level after 4 weeks. Then plan accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.
