Question: Hello, I am 25 weeks 5 days pregnant and have been suffering from severe cough from last friday. I have seen a physician at Fernandez Hospital, Hyderguda and she started me on Augmentin 625 since friday evening. But the cough is still persistent and I have got fever from today morning. I had 100.4 degree temperature and then took Calpol 650. I have a tendency to suffer from Pharyngitis in the past and used to take Loxof in the past. Do you feel Augmentin 625 Is safe for me? After taking Augmentin 625 I need to take Rantac to get relief from Gas which is eventually leading to chest pain.. so Can I take 3 rantac daily (as I need to take 3 doses of Augmentin 625 daily) I have also been suggested to take Piriton cough syrup … Is that safe? Can you please suggest me any Nasal Drop to get relief from Nose block? Due to fever I also need to take Calpol 625 .. is it ok to consume with Augmentin 625. Can I take cetirizine at this stage weekly once to avoid any further allergies? Is there any kind of Flu shot available in India which I can take now? Any home remedies you can suggest to get rid of this severe cough … my condition is miserable due to this.. I have found relief with your suggestions in the past and you are the only hope right now as doctors at Fernandez are not very helpful in dealing with all my questions. Please suggest.

Brief Answer: Flu vaccination is available and possible. Detailed Answer: Hi Ms. Banerjee, Thanks for posting your query. At the outset, please do not worry about the cold and cough; it is going to subside in a couple of days, it is seasonal. Now, coming to your questions, here are your answers: -If you do not have any sensitivity to amoxycillin, this is preferable to levofloxacin since the latter is a category D drug while augmentin is a category B drug which means that no harmful effects have been documented on the fetus and can be used when deemed necessary. -Yes, you can take ranitidine to relieve acidity. The dosage is twice daily, once after lunch and the other, at bed time. You need not follow up every antibiotic dose with ranitidine. If needed, you can take an antacid gel thrice. -Piriton cough syrup contains chlorpheneramine which is better avoided during pregnancy unless absolutely needed. -You can use saline nasal drops for relief from nasal congestion; you can also use applications like Vicks and also use a vaporiser with a drop of eucalyptus oil, nilgiri oil, vicks or turmeric in it. -Yes, Calpol is safe in pregnancy and you can take it with the antibiotic, but, please always make sure that you maintain a gap of five minutes between every medication. -Cetrizine is not needed nor is it advisable on a regular basis since you are pregnant. Instead, try to avoid the factors that trigger your allergy. -Flu shots are available in India and can be taken in any stage of pregnancy if necessary. Glaxo-Smithkline and Serum Institute of India provide vaccines. I am sending you a link-please go through it. WWW.WWWW.WW htm‎ -There are indeed certain home remedies that can give you relief from the cough and cold. Warm saline gargles and drinking XXXXXXX warm water can give you relief from soreness of the throat. You can take a pinch of powdered pepper in milk or honey in warm water or tulsi leaves in warm water or turmeric in milk. Use vaporizer regularly until your cold is cured. There is also kada, but, unfortunately, I do not know the recipe. Even the kashmiri kava which is prepared from saffron is very good for relief from cold and cough. Please take adequate rest and have enough liquids preferably, lukewarm. Do not worry, everything is going to be fine. Hope I have answered your query. Please contact if you need anymore information. I will be happy to help. regards, Shanti.V.
