Brief Answer:
it's potentially fatal...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

CREST may cause serious problems to multiple systems including the most significant one for this syndrome, the kidneys. The extent of skin involvement may be a predictor for the severity of the syndrome. For example, extensive skin involvement (including the trunk) is worse than involvement of the digits alone. Approximately half of patients live 10 years after the diagnosis and half of them (1/4 that is) will be still living another 10 years later (20 years after diagnosis).

For a 82 years old patient, it shouldn't sound that bad. Statistics say that a 82 years old patient is more likely to die due to other disorders (cardiovascular events usually) than CREST, so although this is definitely a serious problem, it isn't likely to be fatal for you.

So in conclusion, CREST may cause serious problems to your body. Renal involvement seems to be among the most serious ones as it is the most commonly connected to death in this syndrome.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
Kind Regards!
