Question : Is Defcort 6 used to treat idiopathic URTICARIA and if yes , how long can it be used continuously for safety reasons for 62 year old male . Can it be used on and off as.and when.hives are in large nos.

Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Oral steroids are not first line treatment for any urticaria. Though they can be given in some cases for short term, usually 10-14 days, specially in a case of acute severe urticaria. but not regularly or intermittentely as would be required in patients of chronic idiopathic urticaria. On the other hand, Oral antihistamines are first line treatment for chronic idiopathic urticaria and unlike oral steroids, they can safely be continued over long periods of time.

For the past three years I am having URTICARIA with intermittent stoppage for 2-3 months . During the period , various specialists gave medication for anti histamine but no relief. One Dr XXXXXXX ghodse prescribed omolizunob 300 injection for three months ( once a month) but I am yet to decide on this. Is this injection a solution for my problem ??.
Secondly , what should be minimum gap between Defcort 6 course after 10-15 days .
Infact Defcort was found effective by default wheny doctor prescribed this as part of combination drugs to treat severe throat infection . Later , when I tried one tab , next day hives don't appear , is intermittent intake of Defcort is ok or should take minimum 10 days once started .

Dear Dr , I have noted in your reply that Defcort shall not be taken intermittently , I asked same question again as part of other queries , sorry
Now , if I take 10-15 days every day one tab of Defcort 6 , then stop it , when can I take next course if need be ??

Hi.

Let me be clear, Oral steroid, even if taken intermittently but chronically are not the right treatment for chronic idiopathic urticaria. If routine doses of oral antihistamines are not effective, they can be upticked to double or eveb 4 times the routine dose. Omalizumab is a good option and can be considered.
