Question : My daughter is 3 years old. She has been suffering from constipation for last 1 month. Her doctor has prescribed econorm XXXXXXX Please do let me know if it is good for her health/situation. Her weight is 12 kgs. Very poor eater. Drinks sufficient water.

She is very poor eater. Foods of different tastes have been tried out, but she rejects almost all. She prefers fruits, noodles over rice/breads. How can I change
her food habit? She is very restless and active.
                                    Hi,
Thanks for your query.
Econorm XXXXXXX contains Saccharomyces boulardii which is a form of yeast.
There are numerous randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled studies showing the efficacy of S. boulardii in the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal disorders.
Most importantly it is helpful in Acute Gastroenteritis in Children. It is also helpful in various types of diarrhoea such as travellers diarrhoea, inflammatory bowel disease and so on.
Its using in pure constipation is not certain unless there associated loose stools.
However, its safe and will not cause any harm to your child if taken. Usual duration is for 5 days.
Regarding her food habits. There are no medicines for that. You should encourage her by giving her intermittent rice/bread. Making different dishes out of rice/wheat other than the traditional dishes will be of help.
Hope his answers your query.
Please get back if you need any further information
Thanks and Regards
Dr Kiran

 Dear Dr XXXXXXX
Thank you very much. Do you recommend any other medication for her constipation?
Thanks & Regards,
Adhip
                                    Hi Adhip,
Well the best way is to increase fibers in diet.
The common fiber XXXXXXX food stuffs are
All XXXXXXX cereal
Beans (kidney and butter)
Peas
Spinach
Sweet corn
Wholemeal brown bread
Red cabbage
Carrots
Baked potato with skin
Apples
Bananas
Oranges with Pulp and so on
i.e fruits, vegetables, whole cereals.
This helps to soften the stools and helps in constipation.
Its better to deal with it through natural way.
If constipation is severe, consider Lactulose Syrup in consultation with your pediatrician.
Thanks and Warm Regards,
Dr Kiran
