Posted on Mon, 7 Dec 2015
Question: I am taking Flucloxacillin (4 grams per day) for cellulitis and also have very swollen gums around my lower right wisdom tooth. Will the antibiotics be able to resolve infection in both the cellulitis and gums?

Brief Answer:
Seems to be PERICORONITIS, can resolve with Flucloxacillin..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your query swollen gums around the lower wisdom tooth points towards a condition known as PERICORONITIS and the gums become swollen due to infection and inflammation caused commonly due to foog accumulation between the gun flap and wisdom tooth..
Flucloxacillin is a narrow spectrum Penicillin group of antibiotic and will help in resolution of both cellulitis and PERICORONITIS and you can continue taking it..
Along with it take anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and do warm saline gargles..
You can also gargle with antimicrobial mouthwash for reducing infection..
Keep the area between gum flap and tooth clean and do not let food to accumulate.

I would like to know from you that has the wisdom tooth completely erupted or partially erupted?

Kindly answer so that I can guide you towards further line of treatment..

Thanks and regards.

I'm pretty sure the tooth has fully erupted, I can see the top of the tooth if I hold back the flap of gum over it. I also have a quite swollen lymph gland near the tooth and the cellulitis is taking awhile to resolve which is making me a bit nervous. I still have about 4 days of antibiotics to go.

Brief Answer:
Continue with the medicine..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome Again..

Thanks for the quick response..

As per your reply you can continue taking the antibiotic and other remedies as I explained in previous answer..
The swollen lymph node is due to infection only and will regress once infection resolve..
You can also do alternate warm and cool compresses over the lymph nodes for faster healing..
In case if there is recurring episode of the same inflammation of the gum flap in future better consult a dentist and get the gum flap removed by a very minor surgical procedure known as OPERCULECTOMY that can be done in a while under local anaesthesia..
As of now take the medicine, hopefully you will get better..

If you have any more questions you are most welcome..

If your query is resolved kindly give me a Five Star Rating and write a Positive Review as a token of appreciation and encouragement..

Wishing you a sooner recovery and a good health.

Thanks and regards..
