Question: Hello doctor, I am 8 weeks pregnant. My doctor has prescribed foljee 9 tablet twice daily for 15 days but I could not get that medicine and pharmacist has provided me L-folinine tablet. Are both the medicine same by composition? Is it ok to take 10 mg folic during pregnancy? Pls suggest.

Brief Answer:
The composition is the same.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.

The composition of both the trade names is the same. You can use the available medication.

The recommended dosage of folic acid is-
400 micrograms during first three months of pregnancy
600 micrograms during 4-9 months of pregnancy
500 micrograms during breast feeding

To make up for the dietary losses and also the available form, additional doses are given. I would suggest a dose of one tablet per day if I were to treat you, considering the amount of folates consumed through diet to add to it. In all, 400 micrograms of available folate should be taken by you during this period of pregnancy. Excess should be avoided.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

Thanks for the reply. But I am obese wt. 89 kgs. And had a missed abortion in the past. Can it be the reason that my doctor has prescribed 10 mg folic per day?

Brief Answer:
Possibly, yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

Possibly, that is the reason for prescription of higher dose. When there is a history of an eventful pregnancy, with a possibility of fetal defects, higher supplements are needed. Also, the bio-availability of any medication depends upon the body weight. So, the dosages are stepped up in obese persons.

Hope this helps.
