Is Ibuprofen Better Than Indomethacin In Managing Gout?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Apr 2017
Question: I have a flare up of gout. Indomethacin, 75 mg twice per day (taken for four days) has not decreased the swelling in toe and foot. Should I try Ibuprofin instead? Ibuprofin has worked well in the past. This is the first flare up of gout in over 15 years.

Detailed Answer:
Hi I'm Dr. Ahmed Aly,
Thanks for using HealthcareMagic,
I have gone through your question and understand your concern,

Actually, both indomethacin and ibuprofen are NSAIDs that decreases inflammation and pain by decreasing hormones that causes inflammation. So I think you may choose 1 of them but you may increase the dose to 3 times per day.

You have to make some diet changes by lowering your salt and high protein containing meals, high fluid intake, avoid alcohol, stop smoking and try to lose weight, if overweight.

In most of the cases, physicians may add prednisone tabs with or without the NSAIDs according to your lab investigations and your pain condition, allopurinol sachets to reduce your uric acid production, probenecid is also given to help your kidneys to eliminate uric acid and colchicine tabs are the most effective for gout pain. Hot massage with topical gels on inflamed joints will be helpful.

If your pain persists, I'd recommend you visit your Rheumatologist for proper evaluation and management to prevent further complications.

Wish you good health,
