Posted on Wed, 10 Feb 2016
Question: Is Lipitor used for the same purpose as Crestor? Since it has a generic, it is far more affordable for me than Crestor, but I need to know if it is comparable.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Yes, lipitor is also a statin like crestor .

The actual drug name for lipitor is atorvastatin and the crestor is rosuvastatin.

The generic atorvastatin is available whereas crestor does not have generic as yet.

In general , crestor tends to work a little better, in that it decreases the cholesterol more for some persons but you should be able to still get a response with the lipitor (atorvastatin)

Because of different manufacturing techniques and slight differences in inactive ingredients may affect the medications minimally. This is the reason that some persons may have noticed slight differences between the lipitor and using the generic atorvastatin.

Summary: (1) both statins and decrease cholesterol
(2)can get a good response with lipitor (atorvastatin) but some get more of a reduction with crestor

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
