Is MBTI And The Enneagram Valid And Accurate? Some Say
Question: Is MBTI and the Enneagram valid and accurate? Some say those personality theories are psudoscience. If that's true, how can so many people give unanimous agreement with characteristics of certain types?
Is MBTI and the Enneagram valid and accurate? Some say those personality theories are psudoscience. If that's true, how can so many people give unanimous agreement with characteristics of certain types?
Brief Answer:
They are reliable.
Detailed Answer:
Dear friend. The purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people's lives. Many research studies have noted that Validity and Reliability are as good as or better than other personality instruments. On retest, people come out with three to four type preferences the same 75% to 90% of the time. You must note that it is 75% to 90%, so the accuracy may vary person to person on test to test.
The Enneagram of Personality, is a model of the human psyche which is principally understood and taught as a typology of nine interconnected personality types. Some researchers have correlated the Enneagram with other personality models, such as the Big Five or Myers-Briggs, and have found their validity comparable, but cannot be completely relied upon.
By taking these personality type tests, psychologists try to assess the person in front of them. As you can see, 75% to 90% of the cases, they could get it right. But these are just indicators.
Psychologists have other clinical methods such as physical appearance, gestures, facial features, eye contact and other identifiers with which they try to come to a conclusion about the personality. But still it may not be said that everything is 100% correct.
MBTI is used by many psychologists across the world and it is almost agreed upon instrument for measuring personality type. Because it is used unanimously, it is considered as trustworthy.
How I clarified your doubts about this. You can clarify if you have further doubts. Take care
They are reliable.

okay Could you explain further how the human mind can be seperated into 9 (enneagram) or 16 (MBTI) types? It seems to me as if the human psychi is created by God or whatever it might be rather than by some random evolution. I mean, if it isn't the creation by God, how could we all fit into nice little types in such a degree of extreme artistic perfection?

Brief Answer:
You are 100% correct
Detailed Answer:
You are correct. God's creation is wonderful. It is very difficult to categorize every human being based on their personality, behavior etc.
Here I am not trying to justify the categorization of MBTI or Enneagram. For any study we need categorization. The most widely accepted categorization is accepted by the researchers so that maximum justification can be given to the study.
Regarding mind, very few areas of god's creation are understood by science. Based on those understandings, theories were made. Every theory or hypothesis is based on the experience present at that moment when it was made. That means every theory is debatable and questionable and alterable. That is the beauty of science.
Psychology being a scientific branch, we too approach the human being, behavior, cognition, etc with an open mind and try to theorize him or his behavior or cognition. MBTI in its crude form was developed in 1942. it took another 30 years to bring it into practice. Enneagram was made usable in the 1960s.
There are numerous other personality assessment tools before and after these like Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, The Birkman Method, etc. Some become dissolute and some are still used. I will never say maximum psychologists are using MBTI or Enneagram. But each psychologist has his own preference.
So none of these personality inventories are 100% correct or can challenge or learn complete "god created psyche".
Hope you can understand my humble explanation.
Take care
