Is Movicol Advisable For A Person With Colon Cancer?

Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

My sister is suffering from colon cancer (rectum area) due to which she is having difficulties in passing stole. Curently, she is under radio and chemo therapy which are causing her extreme burning sensation in passing stole and urine. She is about to finish the above treatments. Doctor has advised her to take Movicol for easy bowl movement and for burning sensation he has prescribed Silvadiazin cream. Is it good for her to use Movicol? as I have read on the leaflet that movicol should not be consumed by people who have obstruction in intestine.

Additionally, she is also passing too much urine like every half an hour especially during night. It has caused her burning and infection in both vaginal and anus area.

Please advice.

Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
movicol may help

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I do not have the complete picture of her disease. Normally the treatment for colon cancer involves resection of the primary tumor. Has it been resected? If it has then there is no tumor to cause obstruction. But even if the tumor was unresectable macrogol (movicol) would help to soften the stool and make them easier to pass through the narrowed lumen. Sivladiazin is just an antiseptic cream, so it won't hurt.

Using drugs for constipation requires medical supervision, so if you feel that your symptoms get worse you should contact the treating physician again.
Regarding the urine, macrogol has nothing to do with it. Perhaps it's a urinary tract infection. A urinalysis would be helpful! Urine culture may identify the causative organism (if it's indeed an infection) and an antibiogram would designate the appropriate treatment options.

I hope you find my comments helpful!

Kind Regards!
