Is Promegan Syrup Safe For A One Month Old Infant?

default
Posted on Sat, 1 Oct 2016
Question: Hello Doctor

I am having a one month old baby boy. Last few days, my son is crying at nights.

We suspected to be gastric and gave bonisan syrup for gas release.

Today we took him to a local doctor and she prescribed promegan syrup for him.

I surfed net and found tat promegan is not suitable for infants.

I am worried now, as I had given three drops of promegan in filler.

Please kindly advise

Brief Answer:
Promegan contains promethazine

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Promegan contains promethazine. Promethazine is contarindicated in children younger than 2 years of age.

But as a pharmacologist I can assure you that a few drops of promethazine will not cause damage to your baby.

There is no need to worry about it.

Dear Doctor,

Thank you for ur response. That was really helpful.

In addition, i would like to say few things about my son

1.He sleeps entire day and from 12 midnight, he starts crying. We could sense tat he is having body pain coz of excess gas. This is relevant when he becomes silent, after passing out gas.
2. We used bonnisan and applied some natural herbs on his stomach, in order to release the gas.
3. This has started only for a few days. He is one month and one week old baby boy.
4. Also, when we keep our hands on stomach we can sense gas moving inside stomach.

Please kindly advise, what would be the reason for the above condition. Can u please suggest us any syrup or any other way to make him releaved.

He is scheduled to have his 45th day vaccination on Sep 20th.

Please kindly advise.

Brief Answer:
Many babies have colic

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

This condition is called colic. The cause is unclear but seems to be from underdeveloped digestive system. It clears up by 4-6 months of age.
After every feed, the baby should be burped. There is a proper technique of burping.
Place baby upright on your shoulder and XXXXXXX gently but firmly on the back. This can be done easily sitting in your favorite chair or while strolling around the house. When baby has passed the gas, he will be pacified and happy. This is normal phenomenon.

Another method to relieve gas is to do "ILU" massage on his tummy. The technique to do this massage is readily available on internet.

If you are breast feeding then you may avoid complex proteins like rajmah, black daal, etc. Also drink cleaner water to avoid infections of gut.

Usually medicines are not needed to relieve colic. Whichever are available are not very effective. But if it gets too bad, then you can give him either gripe water or few drops of colic oral drops.

Hope it helps.
