It is also known as serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase.It is normally produced by cells of liver and small levels are there in blood.When ever there is an external trauma or infection or inflammation in liver cells;The cells swell up and enzyme starts to leak out of the cell membrane.Hence levels are elevated and becomes higher than normal. Persistently elevated levels can indicate liver problem.
The normal range of values for AST (SGOT) is from 5 to 40 units per liter.More then three times elevation is significant and thorough investigations should be done to rule out the exact cause.
