Is STI Tests Done 1 Year After The Exposure Conclusive?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Feb 2016
Question: Hi,
In 2014 I have my first STI test and everything came back negative, including HIV. I got the test done roughly a year after my last sexual encounter. I have not had any sexual encounters since that time but have gotten tattoos and cosmetic injections. Lately, I have been worried that perhaps my tests were wrong, particularly the HIV one. Should I have gone and gotten more tests to get a conclusive result or is one time enough?

Brief Answer:
No further test is required as you are free from HIV.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Jess,

Welcome to HCM.

You had done all your STI reports after one year of last sexual encounter and all were negative than no need to go for repeat test for HIV because you are absolutely free from HIV so don't worry.

The window period for HIV varies from 15 days to 3 months. The HIV test done after window period is highly reliable and 100% accurate so be relaxed and move ahead in life happily as you are risk free.

Thank You

Hi,

Thank you for your fast reply.

I do suffer from quite strong anxiety and I feel that may be playing a big part in my fear. My follow up question is; is there any chance that perhaps it could've been a false negative test as I have read about recieving both false positive and false negative test results.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
The possibility of false negative result after one year is nil.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Jess,

Welcome back to HCM.

The possibility of having false negative result after one year of exposure is nil and only theoretical so don't get so anxious or worried because you are definitely free from HIV. Be relaxed and move on in life. Wishing you happy and healthy life ahead.

Thank you again for your answer.

I have suffered from anxiety for many years and this has always been quite an underlying fear of mine. I was fine for quite sometime until recently when my fear of having HIV sparked up once again.

Despite having no sexual partner since then and my last test, my mind has began racing.. Convincing myself that I'd gotten a false negative test or perhaps they had given me someone else's test results by mistake as it was from a sexual health clinic and you got the answer via calling them.

Are these rational thoughts or is this my anxiety once again making me paranoid?

I do have another question that isn't directly related to this.

Lately, I have found that I have been spotting a week or two after my period. I usually find some brownish/reddish blood on my underwear whenever I go to the bathroom.

Is this common or would you recommend speaking to a Doctor?

I will advice to consult gynecologist for your problem.
