Is Topiramate Safe For Migraine?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 May 2017
Question: Have just been prescribed Topiramate 25 mg po and will increase it weekly until reach 4 tabs, for prevention of migraines. When I saw the side effects I freaked. Especially the potential for glaucoma. I know its rare but still makes me uneasy. Yet these headaches come on fast without any warning and debilitate me. My Neurologist prescribed this and I do trust him. Is there any med that is safer for this condition?
Thank you for your help. XXXX

Brief Answer:
You can continue with topiramate for now.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question here at HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

First, almost all drugs used to prevent migraines, could result in possible side effects, including glaucoma for some of these drugs.

Topamax belongs to antiepileptic drugs that are used to prevent migraines.

Since you didn't experienced any side effects you should continue with Topiramate.

Other alternatives as a preventive treatment about migraines include:

- beta blockers ( propranolol )

- antidepressants ( amytriptiline etc.)

- calcium channel blockers ( verapamil )

- serotonin reuptake inhibitors ( paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline )

- botulinum toxin injections.

Discuss with your Neurologist about these drugs use and probable side effects.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.
