Is Ureaplasma Urealyticum Infection Contagious?

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Mar 2016
Question: I have recently been diagnosed with atypical ureaplasma and given a course of antibiotics. I have been in a monogamous marriage for 5 years and have been faithful the entire time. I also fully trust my partner. We have a 3 year old daughter so I presume my wife would have been screened for the the infection during and after pregnancy. Is there a chance that I may have been carrying the infection undetected for much longer and recently passed it on to my wife?

Brief Answer:
Antenatal screening not contains routine checkup for ureaplasma urealyticum

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.
Ureaplasma Urealyticum can remain symptom free for years together in many sexually active individuals.
So there is every chance that you could have this infection undetected or unsuspected before 5 years. All infections are not necessarily been transmitted to sexual partner. There are instance where the partner remain uninfected even after prologed unprotected sex for years together. They are called as 'Discordant couple'.
Similarly during the antenatal period (child carrying period) all the women are not routinely screened for ureaplasma urealyticum unless there is an indication.
You need not probe into the source of the infection. Get treated and safely remain in your monogamous realtionship. You will have a wonderful time ahaed.
