Is Vitamin B12 Not Absorbed Properly After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Mar 2015
Question: I had gastric bypass in 2006. As a result, I do not absorb vitamins the way I should and often have abnormally low vitamin levels. A doctor I really liked prescribed pabrinex, and I am an RN, so I self administered. This doctor retired, and doctors since do not want to prescribe this medication to me. They just tell me to take vitamins orally. I don't understand the reasoning, as if I could absorb normally, I would get the vitamins from food. I don't think the pills are any more effective than trying to absorb from food. Is there an online doctor that would prescribe Pabrinex for me? Is it dangerous in any way? What is the reasoning for not wanting me to have it?

Brief Answer:
We can not give prescription

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
You are right in assuming that vitamin B 12 is not well absorbed orally after a gastric bypass.
If taken orally a very high dose is recommended.
Intramuscular vitamin B 12 administration is a more effective way of managing B 12 deficiency.
Pabrinex is not dangerous and would be preferable and if I were your doctor I would advise you to continue it.

On healthcare magic we are not allowed to give a prescription so I won't be able to help you with that.

Hope this helps

Thank you very much. I am glad to know the medication is not dangerous. I am not sure why the doctors do not want to prescribe it.
