Is Vyvanse Helpful To Deal With PTSD And Traumatic Brain Injury?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Dec 2014
Question: I'm a disabled veteran who currently works as a police officer. I have 70% PTSD and 20% traumatic brain injury. For the few years as I was trying to re-integrate back into society I found it difficult at time to focus on tasks and had a rough time completing things. Recently my wife (who is diagnosed with ADHD) had me try one of her vyvanse. I found myself in complete control of myself and was able to focus and think clearly the entire day. It was a huge help made me feel normal again. How or if at all should I go about seeking a diagnosis?

Thanks,
XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
yes re-evaluation needed & you can be helped with vyvanse

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing to us.

You mentioned that because of your psychological/neurological problem you are not able to concentrate on task. And because of that difficulty in completing work.It suggests you have problem of attention deficit. Vyvanse (a drug from amphatamine group) is useful in such cases. And considering your history it should be helpful in your case.

Vyvanse must be taken under strict medical supervision as abuse potential is high as well considering side effect profile.Though you have taken on your own this time, I request you go to doctor and discuss regarding the same. You can be evaluated for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and then can be given vyvanse.

Neurochemically ptsd as well as ADD both have relation to noradrenergic system and vyvanse also acts on norepinephrine receptor.receptor. Concentration problems also occur due to changes in dopamine system and vyvanse also covers that. So it is going to helpful in your case.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy if more queries are there.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
