Hello

Thanks for the query.

Wysolone contains Prednisone which is a steroid. This is used as a first line treatment in sudden sensorineural hearing loss for which no cause can be identified, which is generally one sided and develops within 72 hours. It has been shown to improve the recovery outcomes in this condition.
Further, they are also useful in cases where the hearing loss is due to autoimmune diseases ( diseases in which a person’s body produces substances called antibodies which destroy the tissues of the same person)
The side effects of steroids generally depend on the dose that you are taking and the duration for which you have been taking it.
If a small dose is taken over a short period of time, the following side effects can be expected:
•     Weight gain caused by an increase of appetite. To manage weight gain, eat a healthful diet and stay active.
•     Change in appearance causing the appearance of extra weight in the face, abdomen and upper back, and reduced weight in the arms and legs
•     Water retention (edema). To reduce water retention, avoid salty foods
•     Acne
•     Facial hair and body hair growth
•     Mood swings including irritability, agitation, euphoria or depression
•     Insomnia or inability to sleep
•     Easy bruising due to fragile, thinning skin
•     High blood pressure (hypertension)
•     High blood sugar (hyperglycemia)
•     Increased risk of infection
•     Stomach ulcers and upset stomach. To protect the stomach, take steroids with food.
•     Hyperactivity

The long term side effects include:
•     Osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). Calcium and vitamin D supplements and other medications can help prevent osteoporosis.
•     Glaucoma and cataracts
•     Muscle weakness
•     Adrenal insufficiency ( decreased function of the adrenal gland)
It is important to understand that steroids are strictly prescription drugs which should be taken under medical supervision.
Further, I would be able to help you better if you can provide me the details of the patient, symptoms and the treatment that has been started.
Awaiting your reply
I wish you good health

Hi
Thanks Dr. Madhyastha. I developed sudden hearing loss in right ear a few weeks back. It happened overnight. I have been advised 6x5mg (30 mg) of the above medicine for 5 days by a doctors but the other tells me that it is just not needed in my case. I have also noticed the hearing ability going down in both ears for some time now. In 2008 I had experienced same problem in same right ear but the hearing came back on its own after a few days.
The test reports of Dec'2009, Dec'2011 & Jan'2012 are attached. With this added information the question is if I should take this medicine, which has so many possible side effects and if yes then how long? Once I had to be hospitalised for 2 days because of stomach ulcers caused by nsaids. Does it increase the possibility of stomach ulcers in me if I take these steroids?
(There is some confusion about uploading files. Please excuse if reports are not uploaded properly)
Thank you once again.

Hello,

Thanks for replying.

It is good that you took the trouble to upload the images. I have gone through them and it is indicative of sensori-neural deafness. Since the deafness was of acute onset and the medication worked the first time it is worth taking them this time as well.

It is true that taking wysolone will cause gastritis but here the outcome is over weighing the draw backs. There are steps you could take to prevent gastritis

1. Pantoprazole or esomeprazole should be taken before food each day. This stops the gastric acid secretion. Please ask your doctor for the prescription
2. Avoid coffee, alcohol and spicy food until your treatment is on
3. Eat regularly and at shorter intervals
4. Do not sleep at least for two hours post dinner
5. Avoid smoking

I must add here that steroids even though have a lot of side effects, is also very beneficial and one does not expect to get all of them. If any such side effects are noted please inform your doctor so that he can decide to either take them off or reduce the dosage.

I hope I have answered your query, if there are no further queries please accept my answer.

I wish you a speedy recovery

Regards
