Posted on Mon, 16 May 2016
Question: Hi, I am 8 weeks pregnant and my TSH is 11 and Hb 10. My ferritin level is 5.
My doc has prescribed 50 mcg thyronorm and 2 Orofer XT in a day along with a folic acid tablet. Please suggest if this will cause any problem to my baby or my pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
No problem to the fetus or pregnancy,no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
welcome to HCM.

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

TSH of 11 is quite high for pregnancy and makes you hypothyroid.

Thyronorm 50 mcg is the correct treatment and you should take it regularly in pregnancy to keep the TSH levels within normal limits (less than 3.5 in pregnancy).

Orofer-XT and folic acid is routinely given in pregnancy for low iron and iron deficiency anemia.

Thyronorm,Orofer-XT and folic acid tablets are completely SAFE for the fetus as well as for the mother.

So,there is NO need to worry.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Wishing you good health.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

Thanks a lot for the revert.Request if you could answer the below questions-

1) Can 2 Orofex in a day increase chances of miscarriage or have a negative impact on the development of baby's brain?
2) Can hyperthyroid (11) have an impact on the development of brain of the baby?

I am really stressed about all this. Should i continue with the below medication or there needs to be any change?
- 50 mcg thyronorm
- 2 Orofex XT
- 1 Folvite

Brief Answer:
continue with this medications.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for the reply,

1) 2 Orofer-Xt will NOT cause miscarriage or any negative impact on development of baby's (fetus) brain. It is completely safe during pregnancy.

2) Yes,hyperthyroid (high TSH) might affect fetal brain development if high TSH persists in blood for a long time but you need not to worry about it.

With regular thyronorm medications, your thyroid hormones would come in level.

You can continue with this medications as there is no issue to take them.

But check your TSH level after 3 to 4 weeks to titrate the dosage of thyronorm tablet.

Otherwise there is nothing concerned much about Orofer and folic acid tablets.

Hope this will help and will reduce your stress.let me know if you have more doubts.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip Kabra
