Is A TT Vaccination Essential After An Accident?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,
Today I met with a small bike accident. I had small bruises on the palms and hands. And had a small wound on the leg. I have attached the photos with the query. I cleaned them with H2O2, and put povidone iodine powder on it.
One of my friend suggested met to go to doctor and take TT injection.
I had similar accidents before never went to a doctor. They just healed.
Do you suggest me to, go to a hospital and take medicine for these small wounds. Do I need a TT injection?
Please suggest. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
You need to take a dose of TT vaccine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

I understand that you met with an accident and had small bruises on palms and hands. You cleaned it with Hydrogen peroxide and applied povidone Iodine powder over it.

Your wounds are minor and you have cleaned it, so I would suggest you to take a dose of TT vaccine whether you were immunized with TT previously and have not taken any TT injection within 10 yrs.

If you are immunized and had taken a booster dose within 5 yrs then there is no need to take any injection now.

If you are unimmunized or have unknown history of immunisation, then I would advise you get completely immunized with TT vaccines. It will be a series of 3 doses of vaccine.

Hope this answers your query. If any further clarifications, will be happy to help you.

Regards.

Thank you doctor.

I went to a near by clinic, to take TT injection. The doctor gave me a TT injection and gave cefixime tablets(6) and hifenac-p tablets(6). She said there is no need to take more injections. Is it ok?

i have one more question in my mind,
She did not open the syringe in front of me, and she didn't throw it away after she used it for me. do doctors reuse syringes. Is there anything i can take care of now. apologies if its a irrelevent question.

Brief Answer:
It should be fine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the follow up.

It should be fine with a single dose of TT and continue medications as advised by the doctor.

Regarding reuse of syringes, I doubt she will reuse it again. This is not followed in the modern practice. Do not worry regarding this.

Thank you very much doctor for quick reply.

Do you advise me to clean the wounds daily with H2O2 and apply povidone iodine powder? Or shall I just apply band-aid and leave them. Please suggest.

Will there be any problem if I eat dal or curd. Should we not eat them when there are wounds?

Brief Answer:
Clean everyday with Hydrogen peroxide.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the follow up.

You can clean everyday with hydrogen peroxide and povidone iodine and do not apply any band aids. As open wounds heal faster.

Within a week a black scab normally forms over the wound which later falls off naturally with a new skin below.

In my opinion, you can have normally as before and I doubt dal and curd hinders the healing of the wound.

Hope this answers your query. If no further clarifications, you can close and rate the query.
