Is A Negative HIV RNA Test Result At 5 Weeks Conclusive?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: I have had two potential exposures, (condom protected sex with unknown woman)
one 11 weeks ago and another 5 weeks ago.

Would a NEGATIVE HIV RNA qualitative test be conclusive 'as of today' or should I test again after this ?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Protected intercourse and HIV RNA PCR declares you HIV non reactive...

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

I understand your concern.

I am Dr. Arun Tank, infectious disease specialist, answering your concern.

First thing your exposure is protected as you mentioned. In protected intercourse one should not worry regarding HIV infection. So there is no question of HIV in this case.

Secondly, you have tested for HIV RNA PCR after 11 and 5 weeks of exposure. HIV RNA test is conclusive after 1 week of exposure. PCR test is a gold standard test for HIV diagnostic and its value is considered significant after a week of testing. Once obatined result is consider as final and it wont requires second testing.

So after both this point you can say or declare your self as HIV non reactive person.
