Is A Purple Bruise Behind The Knee And On The Abdomen Two Weeks After The Stents Implantation A Cause For Concern?

Question: I am taking 75mg Clopidogrel, 80mg Atorvastatin, and 10mg Lisinopril in the evening along with a low dose aspirin in the morning after having 3 stents put in my "widow-maker" artery two weeks ago. Recently, I discovered a purple "bruise" on the back of my knee and another on my abdomen. They are staying purple and not "turning color" like a regular bruise. Is it concerning? Should I call my doctor ( it's Friday, of course) ? What is causing these bruises?

Brief Answer:

Antiplatelet drugs probably.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The most likely cause for the bruises is the combined antiplatelet action of Clopidogrel and Aspirin perhaps added to a minor injury. As these drugs prevent the platelets from forming the platelet-clot prolonged bleeding may occur as a result of even minor injury.

Regarding the color of the bruise, it usually turns to yellow or even a green-like color after a few days. If you're not sure whether it's a bruise or not then perhaps you should show it to a doctor.

Do you have other symptoms like pain on the involved site? Does it feel warmer than the surrounding tissues? Do you have fever?

Awaiting your response.
