Question : I have a painful pea sized nodule to the left of my sternum. Feels like my son's herniated belly button. Came up within a day. Wondering if it could be a hernia as well

Yes, hernia is possible. Especially as it has appeared so quickly. Hernia should be more visible when standing and less visible when lying down.
Ultrasound should diagnose it. You may consult general surgeon.
