Is A Weight Of 14.8 Normal For A 10 Month Old Child?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 May 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,
My baby is 10.5 months old and she is 14.8 kgs! Her birth weight was 2.8kgs (DOB 20th May 2014)
At the same time she is also quite tall.(76 cms)

Wanted to give you two information.
1) I was also heavily built when I was a kid and
2) My baby consumes breast milk for around 7-8 times in a day.(apart from 4 times solid)
I wanted to know
1) Is there something to worry about or is this overweight harmful for the baby?

2) We have done her TSH/T3/T4 Tests at the time of her birth and everything seems to be normal and within range. Moreover none of us have TSH in our family. So not sure if we need to for another TSH test.

3) Also please let me know how much water we need to give her daily?

4) Can we give her egg yolk and ghee/butter

5) My pediatrician is suggesting to stop breast feeding as much as possible, but as per WHO guideline its advisable to breast feed for at least 2 years. So I am in a catch 22 now! Please advice

Many thanks for your time.

Best Regards

Brief Answer:
Growth charting needs to be done.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

The birth weight of a child is expected to double by 5 months and triple by 10-12 months. Although the weight indeed seems to be on the higher side, it could be due to constitutional structure as in case of your childhood. A single weighing does not convey anything. The weight needs to be taken at 3 monthly intervals and plotted on a growth chart. If the weight plotting moves in the same trajectory as expected, there is nothing to worry. But if it is steeper than expected, you would need to discuss about it with your pediatrician. Till then breast feeding along with intermittent solids is absolutely fine and there is nothing to worry. Water is a relatively optional item and is meant to moisten the mouth and ease the swallowing wherever applicable. The adequacy of hydration would be reflected in the number of times urine is passed. If it is adequate, there is no need to worry. I would not suggest stopping breast feeding. Please follow the WHO recommendations.

You can give egg yolk, ghee, butter and everything else, but too much of nothing is good. So just keep it in mind and limit the amount.

If thyroid profile is normal, I do not see any reason to repeat the test.

Hope that helps.
