Question : hello doctor :)
Im a person of concern; Im always careful for my health, like using hearing-plugs - sunglasses, uvglasses and like that, and always avoid circumstances that are unhealthy.

I want to ask a little about eyes; I work as a photographher and phone technican. Sometimes I repair smartphone cameras and flashes and 2-4 times a year I accidentely get flashes diretly into my eyes from a smartphone while testing a selfie or closer proximity. This is blinding for a few seconds or mintues and then eyes gradually turn to normal and sometimes it can be very uncomfortable.
Even I try to avoid everything I can to stay healthy and try to use all safety equipment as possible, despite that there are always uncontrollable circumstances like getting a flash into your eyes, someone pointing a flashlight into your eyes or driving at night as a car flash their main light directly at you, all of these are very uncomfortable feelings and for some persons, they dont even think about them. But for me I always think is this safe and will this do me damage, ??

can you please tell me a little more about the eyes and are eyes capable of handling sudden and aproximity flashes; like from a smartphone or a small camera ?

best regards XXXX

Brief Answer:
Damage to the eye with flash lights

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

First let me assure you that the frequency of repairs (2-3) per year is safe. Second, the light from a standard flashlight on phones cannot cause ocular damage, however proximal they are. Similarly headlights of a car do not damage the eye or cornea for such few seconds of flashing.

If you are working in an industry with Laser lights, you should be careful. The damage occurs with Laser lights and one has to know the lumens per unit area to know the extent of damage.

Hope I have answered your query.
