Is Accidental Inhalation Of Sealant Spray During Pregnancy A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2016
Question: I am currently 25 weeks pregnant and have been using a sealant spray for my craft business on and off throughout my pregnancy. I knew that spray paint was bad, but didn't realize until yesterday that the label on the sealant spray says "contains chemicals known to cause birth defects by the State of California." The ingredients were: methoxy2propyl, acetate, acetone, toluene, xylene and butane

I usually try to spray outside, wear a mask or at least hold my breath and not breathe in the fumes when I spray the sealant. However, I know that I have still breathed in some of the sealant over the past two months despite these measures.

I have tried so hard to do all the "right" things in pregnancy, and I am so scared that I have hurt my baby from using this product for my business.

So far she has looked perfectly healthy on blood tests and ultrasound scans. The only thing they have told us is that she has a marginal cord.

Have I accidentally hurt my little baby? What is the likelihood that she has been harmed? What are the type of birth defects she could have?

Brief Answer:
Your baby is unharmed from the use of sealant

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The chemicals mentioned in the can of spray cause birth defects if ingested over a prolonged period of time and in high concentrations.

2. Considering the nature of your use of the product, it is clear that wearing the mask has offered you concentration and you have used it for domestic purposes.

3. The problem with chemical ingestion increases in those women who are working in industrial environment and have a pregnancy.

4. You have not hurt your baby in any manner and please do not blame yourself for unintentional harm.

5. Any baby with high risk exposure to these chemicals will have multiple birth defects. If there was any big birth defect then it will been seen on ultrasound scan. The baby is healthy and normal and therefore not harmed by the use of chemicals. Please avoid inhaling the spray directly till delivery.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
