Brief Answer:
Stage 1 (mild ) hypertension can pose future risks if not controlled

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Firstly thanks for selecting health care magic to ask your query,
Have noted all your details!

Blood pressure is divided into four catagories according to journal of XXXXXXX college of cardiology

normal b.p <120/80mm of hg

prehypertensive stage 120-139/80-89 mmm of hg

stage 1 mild hypertension 140-159/90-99 mm of hg

stage 2 moderate hypertension 160-179/100-109 mm of hg

stage 3 severe hypertension -greater then that!

Blood pressure 157/74 falls under stage 1 systolic blood pressure and normal diastolic blood pressure!

As age of a person increases the blood vessels become stiffy and looses their elasticity so the blood pressure increases. For a young adult normal bp is less then 120/80 but for a adult person the criteria changes to a target b.p of less then 140/90 mm of hg.

At your age our target is to achieve a blood pressure less then 140/90 mm of hg.
Your blood pressure is 157/74 ,though at a age of 66 , its not that bad .But systolic pressure are on higher side which can pose a risk for your heart in future .

So i would advice you to follow life style modification initially to achieve a target bp of 140mm of hg systolic ,because if not controlled now stage 1 will change to stage 2 in few years and this can effect your heart ,kidney and eyes in long term.

I would like to recommend you
45minutes of strenous exercise atleast 6 days a week for 3months
limit your salt intake to 2 grams per day
Drink plenty of water
Brisk walking for 30minutes a day at a speed of 5.1km/hr is advised.
Add fibres to your diet .
Avoid over oily food
follow this for 3months and keep a record of your blood pressure weekly ,in case you are not relieved in 3months ,you would be prescribed with a antihypetensive medication like calcium channel blocker (amlodipine ) to achieve the target blood pressure of less then 140/90. your diastolic b.p is already fine ,just follow my instructions and your systolic b.p will also be normal.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask ! I would be happy to help you.

Thanks
