Posted on Fri, 29 Dec 2023
Question: hi doctor, my baby has completed 3 weeks and I have noticed that she has started nursing more and for more duration (very happy about it). now after nursing I try giving her burp... which she used to do every time but now it has reduced... I try giving her burp for 15 to 20 minutes but no sign of burp... now when I make her sleep... she coughs and vomits milk... this milk has little of curd like substance... I wanted to ask if its normal or m k breastfeeding her more than before? note: last week we checked and her weight gain was fine but this vomiting thing started in 3 week

Brief Answer:

Proper burping is important

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Let me emphasize the fact that breast milk is the best possible milk for a baby and there can be no alternatives for the same.

It is really good to know that you are breastfeeding your baby. The problem seems to be with burping. You should burp the baby for at least 15-20 mins after each feed.

All you need to do is to hold the baby head end elevated for this duration. The extra air is taken causes distention and hence colics.

Proper burping will ensure its escape and the milk will not regurgitate back from the stomach to the food pipe, thus providing relief.

Otherwise, it is normal and not a cause for concern.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
