Is Constant Fluctuations In One's BP Levels A Serious Concern?

Question: Yes, hopefully you can provide some insight. Over the years, I have had a slight BP issue. Have been taking a small dosage of Diovan. Because my bp was very normal in the docs office (115/72), he suggested that I stop taking the Diovan. I did this in the Spring of 2017 after my appointment with my doc (a cardiologist). During the summer, I took my bp every few days and noticed something very unusual--the bp was very low on some readings (85/60 for example) but very high (150/100) on others. This continues to this day. Based on my local medical team, I took my bp every day for a month. The average was 117/78. But I still had the high level of variability noted above. Any insights? I am a 77 year old male in good health otherwise.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Welcome and thank you for asking us!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that these blood pressure fluctuation are not indicative of hypertension and do not need to be treated.

You should know that it is quite normal to have higher blood pressure values during straining physical activity, caffeine intake or emotional stress.

From the other hand, low blood pressure could be related to lack of physical activity or dehydration (low fluid intake or increased sweating).

But, considering your mean blood pressure values, there is no need to take anti-hypertensive therapy.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
