Is Coughing Something To Be Worried About After Getting A Nissen Fundoplication And Small Hiatal Hernia Repair?

Question: hello :)
I did have nissen fundoplication and small hiatal hernia repair 20.januar 2017.
I have been very protective and tried to everything I could to make this repair a success and it works really great.
non heavy lifting and no hard bendings
But one thing that worries me automatically, is when I caught or sneeze. Its seems like a caught puts very much pressure on my stomach, not sure if thats right. It doesnt give me problems; but it just gives me the feeling of I should be holding back, to keep my wrap safe.
Can you please tell me, are normal caughts like when you swallow water wrongly or after the flu anything to worry about ? can I caught freely without worrying about damaging my wrap ?
best regards XXXXX

Hi,
I can say as follows:
1. With regards to you cough there is nothing to be worried.
It can't damage your wrap. It has passed more than 1 year from your Nissen fundoplication and ut makes it strong enough.
2. I would like to know if you have cougt permanently or occasionally. If your cough is permanently than it is important to rule out the cause.
3. If your cough is occasionally then there is nothing to be worried about. You can cough freely, nothing bad is going to happen.
Hope it was helpful to you! If you have other concerns I would be happy yo assist you further.

I havent been caughing at all for one year.
It did get the flu and got sick for 5 days, and 1-2 days after the flu I have been caughing few times pr.day for 7 days. started with some mocus and now its dry and starts to be less and less.
I guess this is normal reaction to being sick ?

Hi,
It is quite normal to have cough after the flu. Your cough is not related with reflux disease or with Nissen.
Don't worry it will pass totally after a couple of days.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

thank you very much :)
I have just one more question about nissen :)
I cant burp and that was the meaning with the surgery, before the surgery the doctor told me. :) .. anyway I manage the gas and bloating with lifestyle and excercise.
But sometimes I eat the wrong food and sometimes swallowing too much air; or sometimes if its too long between meals so I get gas pains. The hurt like hell, but they are also quickly gone after farting(or taking 125mg of simeticon).
What I wanted to know, even the gas hurts after eating too much or too little or just the wrong good; does gas pose any threats to the wrap or stomach ? ,, or is it just not dangerous at all; if its just trapped air ? ..
and is taking simeticon pulver 125mg few times pr.months just when you have problems with gas; safe ?
best regards XXXX

Hi,
With regard to gas formation or swallowing, diet is so much important. Therefore, you should avoid eating fast and swallowing gas or using food that produce gas.
Gas gives you bloating and abdominal discomforts. This is the reason why we recommend our patients with GERD to avoid such foods.
It is not directly dangerous for Nissen fundoplication but it can aggravate reflux disease.
With regard to Simethicone you cab use it as you need. It will help improve your symptoms.
Hope it was helpful to you.
