Is Delay In Menstrual Bleeding A Sign Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Nov 2016
Question: Hi,
I have missed my period by 9 days. I tried home urine pregnancy tests thrice and all 3 were negative. I searched on internet and have gone through Beta HCG test today.
The Reports are awaiting tomorrow. Can I Be pregnant?
Me and My husband are not ready for a baby yet. What can be further steps if the test comes positive tomorrow. Is this the correct test to confirm pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
It is the correct test.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Urine pregnancy test is usually 97% accurate. Beta HCG test is even more accurate test to rule out or diagnose pregnancy. In case the test comes positive then there are medicines that can help you to terminate the pregnancy. Since the urine tests were negative, the chances of pregnancy are low. The delay in periods can be due to mild hormonal imbalance.
After the test do consult your gynecologist for hormonal therapy to get back the periods in case the test is negative or for prescription of abortion pills in case the test comes positive.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

thanks for your reply.
what can be the cause of hormone changes?
my period was normal last month.
i am overweight.
can that be a cause for this?
or can you list out all the causes of missed period other than pregnancy?

Answered by Dr. Dr. Rakhi Tayal (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Can be due to being overweight.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The hormone changes can happen due to being overweight, stress, anxiety, travelling, excessive exercise, sudden fasting, etc. The other reasons of delayed periods may be other medical conditions that affect the ovaries, uterus, hypothalamus, or pituitary gland. Hypothyroidism, polycystic ovarian syndrome or less frequently a pituitary tumor causing high prolactin levels or a hypothalamic disease are other causes that may be the cause if pregnancy is ruled out.
Hope my answer is helpful.

If this is due to obesity.. can there be a temporary solution for this?
I know i will have to reduce weight as a permanent solution but if this is the case of only hormonal changes then what can be the solution for this?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Rakhi Tayal (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Hormonal tablets will help.

Detailed Answer:
A temporary solution is to take hormonal tablets after getting it prescribed from your gynecologist. You will have your periods in 7-10 days and then try to reduce some weight. In case this is recurrent then detailed investigations are needed.

Hi Doctor,
My reports have come and HcG is 0.4
Is there any possibility that i may be in first week on conceiving and thats why HcG level is low?

Usually at what time HcG level increases.. is this within 2 3 days after conceiving or takes time?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Rakhi Tayal (7 hours later)
Brief Answer:
No pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Your HCG levels are too low to suggest a conception. HCG levels start increasing within 7 days of conception. In your case, pregnancy is ruled out.
Regards.
